Deciding on the Sail size
When deciding on the size of the sail, there are a few points to consider.
The standard sail which is bought by around
95% of my customers is the Commander 0.8m.
This is the twin batten sail with reefing eyelets and sewn in boom.
This sail has a mast length of 146cm and
will fit most boats. The mast base is
mounted approximately 136cm forward from the FRONT edge of the cockpit coaming
and the sail overlaps the cockpit by 10cm
The other option is the Commander 1m2 loose foot, which has a mast length of 166cm and will overlap the cockpit by 30cm. This sail is NOT suitable for boats under 5.3m. The overlap is along the centre of the boat. When stowed the mast lies to one side of the cockpit and the overlap isn’t too much of a problem.
However, many paddlers might not be happy with this amount of overlap as it can impede entry and exit into the kayak to some degree. This sail is more suited to an experienced kayaker who has had kayak sails in the past and is used to kayak sailing.
The other point to consider is that the 1m2
has a loose foot which can at times get tangled up with other deck lines etc.
Up to 10knots of windspeed there isn’t much difference between the 2 sails, but as the wind increases in the 10-15knot range, the larger sail is at an advantage.
As an all-round sail which works well in most conditions, I would definitely recommend the Commander 0.8m. It’s a simpler sail to use with no adjustments to the foot, and with the reefing eyelets, can be used up to the 20knot range.
Choosing the sail Colours
The sail is made up of 4 panels. Colours of the top 3 panels can be selected from the colour chart below. The bottom panel No. 4 is Translucent sail cloth on every sail, chosen for its good folding characteristics and cannot be changed. This material is translucent when viewed close up but cannot be seen through when sailing. Forward vision is by looking underneath the sail, with the sail mounted high enough to enable this.
Trim colours can only be Black or Red. Mast luff pockets are matched to the predominant colour of the sail. Batten and Boom pockets can be either Clear or Black
Available sail Colours to select from
When ordering your sail, select the colours you would like for Panels 1, 2 and 3. Panel 4 will always be translucent. Request either Black, Blue or Red trim, and the colour of the batten and boom pockets, either Clear or Black. To help you decide on your colour selection check out the other posts to see pictures of sails in colours that have previously been ordered.
